Thai Buddhist > Monk Ordination > Photo Album 03

After wien tien has finished, the would-be-monk is ready to enter the bot. Before he does so, he throws coins towards the crowd of people that just took part in the procession. Everyone runs to snatch up the coins as it is believed that the coins bring them good luck. This is also symbolic as the young man no longer needs any money while in the monkhood.

Inside the bot there is a lot of chanting and sitting very still. The whole ceremony can go on for more than an hour. In the picture on the right, the parents of the young man are presenting the robes that will be worn while he is a monk.

You can watch 2 video clips of the ceremony.
