Giant Bodhi Tree in Prachinburi
At Wat Ton Pho Sri Maha Pho in Sri Mahosot District of Prachinburi, there is a giant Bodhi tree that is believed to be over 2,000 years old. It has a circumference of 20 meters and a height of 30 meters making it both the biggest and oldest of its kind in Thailand.
Thais believe that this tree is an offshoot of the original bodhi tree that The Lord Buddha meditated and became enlightened underneath over 2,550 years ago. A sapling of this tree was brought to Thailand many years ago via Sri Lanka.
King Rama V mentioned this bodhi tree during his travels in Prachinburi in 1908. He wrote “…it is an old and a highly worshipped tree”. The bodhi tree is a symbol of Buddhism and was later adopted as the emblem for Prachinburi province.
